The Ministry of Education has introduced a new automated selection system for learners transitioning from Grade 9 to Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This online platform allows schools to manage learner profiles, select learning pathways, and choose suitable senior schools in a structured, transparent, and digital process. With CBC now firmly in place, this step ensures that learners are placed in pathways aligned with their interests, talents, and career aspirations. It also promotes equity by ensuring learners across Kenya are matched with appropriate institutions through a standardized digital process.
This guide is designed to help teachers, headteachers, and parents navigate the Grade 10 selection system with ease and accuracy.
How to Log In to the Grade 10 Pathway Portal
To begin the selection process, follow these login instructions carefully:
- Open a web browser on your device and go to the official placement portal: selection.education.go.ke
- On the homepage, click the Log In button.
- If you’re using a mobile phone, tap the three bars (menu icon) on the top right corner to find and click the login option.
- Enter the school’s NEMIS UIC (Unique Institution Code) and its corresponding password. Ensure the credentials are accurate to avoid login errors.
- When prompted for a verification code, type 54321. (Note: This is only valid during the pilot phase of the system.)
✅ Once logged in successfully, you’ll land on the learner management dashboard where you can begin updating learner profiles and performing selections.
Step-by-Step Guide to Pathway Selection
After logging in:
- Click on the Pathway Selection tab. If on a mobile device, open the navigation menu by clicking the three lines (top-left corner).
- A list of all Grade 9 learners registered under your institution will be displayed.
- For each learner, perform the following:
- Update their profile details.
- Indicate if they have any special needs or disabilities.
- Specify the presence of key stakeholders during the decision-making session (e.g., Parent/Guardian, Head of Institution, Class Teacher, or Learner).
- Enter the parent or guardian’s contact details and identification information.
- Update the learner’s home and residence location, including county and sub-county of origin.
- (Optional) Add any relevant comments or special notes.
- Once all fields are correctly filled, click Submit and confirm the details to proceed.
Selecting Learner’s Pathway
This is one of the most important steps. Every learner must be placed into only one pathway based on their interest, strength, and career projection. The three available pathways under CBC are:
- STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics: Ideal for learners with a strong interest in science-related careers.
- Social Sciences – Focused on humanities, business, and related fields.
- Arts & Sports Science – Suited for learners with talents in performing arts, fine arts, or athletic abilities.
Once a learner’s pathway is identified:
- The system will display all available subject combinations offered under the selected pathway.
- Choose three subject combinations that best align with the learner’s interests and potential.
- Click Submit to lock in the selections and move to the school selection phase.
It’s important to hold a consultation session with the learner and guardian before finalizing the chosen pathway.
Selecting Senior Schools (Per Subject Combination)
For each selected subject combination:
- Choose 4 schools—one from each of the four national school clusters (Cluster 1 to 4).
- Once schools are selected for a given combination, that subject combination will disappear from the list.
- Repeat the process for the remaining two subject combinations.
After selecting schools for all 3 combinations, you can download or print the learner’s full profile as proof of submission.
Important Notes
- This is NOT the NEMIS portal. Do not attempt to access the system via NEMIS.
- This is a dedicated platform created for managing Grade 10 CBC placement.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Can learners choose more than one pathway?
A: No. Each learner must be placed in only one pathway that reflects their abilities and interests.
Q: Are parents required during selection?
A: Yes. Parental involvement is crucial and should be documented as part of the selection process.
Q: What happens if the platform shows errors or doesn’t load?
A: Clear your browser cache, switch devices, or try again later. Persistent issues should be reported to your sub-county education office.
Q: Is this system active nationwide?
A: Currently, it’s in the pilot stage, but a full national rollout is anticipated soon.
Final Thoughts
The introduction of the automated Grade 10 selection portal marks a progressive step in actualizing CBC objectives in Kenya. It empowers schools and parents to make informed decisions while promoting fairness, inclusivity, and alignment with learner potential.
Stakeholders are encouraged to take the process seriously, ensure data accuracy, and complete selections within the stipulated timeframes.
